Finn’s Story

“I guess when it all happened there were those cases where we weren't sure what things that he would miss out on. But seeing him today, being involved, it just shows you that even though he isn't fully abled, he can be a part of absolutely anything that he puts his mind to and it's really pleasing to see.

When Finn was 13 months old, he contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia, it was like cold and flu symptoms one night. Finn was deteriorating really quickly, on-call doctors came in they said he just had a viral infection. It wasn't until eight or ten hours later that we ended up at a hospital and then from there he was comatose and as the story goes, you know, his life was in the balance. They were able to bring him back from that, and then the amputations start.

He had to learn absolutely everything again, and it was really amazing to watch such a young little kid find whatever it was on the inside to continue to go forward.

When we found out that Finn wanted to be involved in the colour fun run, he came home and told us all about it. He gave us the pamphlet and just said I want to do this, look how cool it is!

That brought up all sorts of little emotions for me, but mostly I was just proud, so proud, that I can't wait to see him running around and doing everything with everyone else. With all of his peers and his friends at school.

As a dad, today meant the world to me. It was so amazing to see that little boy of ours, you know running and jumping and having an absolute ball, it was great.

As a mum, I think today was breath-taking. To see his face light up as much and be involved with his peers and his class and everything, It blows your mind, the joy that it brings you to see him involved.

I think Finn's experience from today was absolute pure and utter joy. The expression on his face the whole time was amazing to see. I think he loved every single minute of it. Even running a whole lap of that run by himself and he got himself into an actual run, which was amazing to see.

It makes me feel very proud. It's like there's no boundaries for him really, he just gets in and gets it done. He might have to try a little bit harder than other kids, but he just gets into it. It's great he was that happy and joyful.

Even when dad got involved with him as well he was pretty happy and pretty excited.

I'd love to thank the school; they've been so accepting I'm going to start crying now. They've been so acceptive of him and just including him in everything. It's been amazing, yeah thank you, thank you Chancellor for putting it on. Thank you! Yeah, thank you for making it possible the kids’ faces were lit up it was amazing, absolutely amazing, never seen so much excitement on the kids in one day… great!”
